چکیده

We have examined 8004 plates at the Harvard College Observatory Plate Collection searching for optical transient emission from the gamma-ray burst GRB 970228. This is the first archival search carried out so far for a gamma-ray burst with known transient optical emission. The total exposure time amounts to ∼ 1.1 yr. No convincing optical activity was found above 12.5 mag at the expected position of the GRB 970228 optical counterpart.

No Radio Afterglow from the Gamma - Ray Burst of February 28 , 1997

We present radio observations of the gamma-ray burster GRB 970228 made with the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO) spanning a range of postburst timescales from one to 300 days. A search for a time-variable radio source was conducted covering an area which included a fading X-ray source and an optical transient, both of which are thought to be the long waveleng...

Implication of the discovery of the proper motion of the optical counterpart of GRB 970228 for the models of gamma-ray bursts

The accurate position determination of GRB 970228 by the Beppo/SAX Satellite led to the discovery of a fading X-ray and optical counterparts of the burst. About a month after the GRB event the proper motion of the ejecta was detected and the extended optical source has faded below the Keck detection level. We analyze these observations in the framework of the most popular gamma ray burst models...

Observations and Theoretical Implications of Gamma Ray Burst 970228 Daniel

Gamma ray burst 970228 is the first GRB for which prolonged post-burst transient x-ray, optical, and infrared emission has been detected. It has two components: a point source, which is known to be fading, and an extended source, which may or may not be fading. Assuming that the point source dominated the emission at all times, its emission is shown to be consistent with that of the remnant of ...

HST Data suggest proper motion for the optical counterpart of GRB 970228 ?

After a quarter of a century of γ-ray burst (GRB) astronomy, the Italian-Dutch satellite BeppoSAX on Feb 28, 1997 detected a soft X-ray afterglow from GRB 970228 and positioned it accurately. This made possible the successful detection of an optical transient. Two public Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images of the GRB/optical transient region were taken on March 26 and April 7, 1997. They are an...

Observations and Theoretical Implications of GRB 970228

GRB 970228 is the first gamma ray burst for which prolonged post-burst transient x-ray, optical, and infrared emission has been detected. Recent Hubble Space Telescope observations show that the transient consists of two components: a point source, which is known to be fading, and an extended source, which is possibly fading. I fit standard fireball remnant models to the first month of x-ray, o...
